How A Last Minute Road Trip…lead me to Empathy: #IYP ‘Longevity’
So first off…why the picture of fast food? How does that relate to EMPATHY? Great question, and the answer is…I am going to tell you this story; of how a last minute phone call that took me away for a long weekend road trip to babysit someone’s awesome children due to a family emergency gave me the insight to see empathy for the situation which happens all to often in which I would normally 100% of the time pass judgement on and shake my head in disbelief. However due to this little tale I, through compassion and understanding have a small insight into the “why’s” of people’s choices. There is no way I support these choice’s but I can understand it and see why it’s the easy choice…I phucking get it!!
Ok a little insight into how I or we would ‘usually roll’ if we were going to be setting out on a 4–5 hour drive on a long weekend road trip. So at least a day or 2 prior to the leave date we would make plans/ideas for snacks on the road, waters, etc and as well make a small items list of meals or more hearty snacks if we arrived late and nothing was open, or that just in case factor. We would then do a grocery run the day of or night before we left for all those goodies. Then within the hours before departing we would make up the goodies and pack up the ‘to go’ cooler and be on our merry way all stocked up and stoaked up with healthy, delicious treats for our journey! Like I mentioned this is normally! This time however, it was not in the cards…so I rolled a whole other way!
Ok we get the call at about 4pm and the goal was ASAP to leave to lend a helping hand…so pack your shit up and rock it within the next 30 minutes, BOOM that’s- that! So no prep time to shop, no prior food ingested before leaving it was just head out, I did manage to grab a few banana’s an avacado, water and an apple. There you have it hit play “ON THE ROAD AGAIN…I JUST CAN’T WAIT TO GET BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN!! It’s Friday evening, it is the long weekend, the weather is absolutely beautiful so the roads are jammed packed and traffic is pretty thick, not a snails pace but just under steady…. we are not winning any speed setting races if ya dig what I’m putting down. Within the first let’s say 2 hours I went through my last minute snacks and am now starting to get hungry for something hearty something solid. You know what it’s like when you kinda start getting hungry no big deal yet, but I do start noticing others eating in the vehicles around me, most if not all are some type of burger and fries type deal from one of the many buger joint chains. Still not a biggie for me…cool but as traffic starts to slow just a little, and the hours started to creep from that 2 hour mark to the 3.5 hour mark…now I am hungry for sure and at this point I have just decided to keep my eye open for a place to swing into to get something to munch on. This is where my awareness (my practice) comes into play, becasue I made a conscious decision to look for food (and to verify I mean the type of foods that are fit to fuel a healthy 110% high efficient running body)…I start to really really be aware of my surroundings. This is where the story changes.
After 30 minutes of my decision nothing yet as far as good or healthy food choice, ok I get it fair enough I just started looking. 45 minutes later, nothing 1 hour 25 minutes, still nothing and at this point I am almost ready as the traffic is at a stop to ask the family beside me in their huge motor home for some of their left over fast food shit…which I have not touched in at least 9–10 years…so poppa was phucking HUNGRY!! At this point again traffic is stopped in both directions we are near what they call a gasoline alley lots of gas stations, and fast food joints. There was a stalled car which caused this mess of a wait. Deal with it, and be situationally aware my higher self said to me after what seemed like an eternity in a daze but was a total of about 15 minutes of listening to Meatloafs’s great hits (ps ‘I would do anything for love’…great phucking song!!) So I start looking around we are all stopped we are all human we all have the same issues we bleed the same blood -red and spend the same money -green. So what do I see; first off I see a lot and I mean a lot of families together which I think right away is awesome this is a very strong bond to create good values in our family times together, I see a lot of the kids on their phones, either listening to music -you know I love that (go get some of my free music at www.mossamo.com for your next road trip!!) I see them swiping so they are either on Instagram, FB , Snapchat…all good they are doing what they will…we are stopped in traffic why not! I notice some couples talking and laughing…so cool to see, I see a lot more not talking at all and either staring off into space or on their phones as well, I also see some so antsy to get to where they are going that even I can feel their stress by just looking into their vehicle. But let’s not forget how phucking HUNGRY I am so the next things I started to notice where just due to the lack of food in my belly! So again I am just gazing outside to the environment and surroundings, we have been stopped maybe 15 -20 minutes now and I start noticing what people are puting into their mouth’s again. I start noticing the massive lines formed to order from the drive through’s of all these establiments, I start to notice their placement’s to exit ramps, public rest room’s, gas stop’s…I mean its beyond brilliant, honestly and if you have ever done your research on these companies they spend the time and money to figure out our habits as to where to put their food establishment’s to maximize their profits. I SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE. For myself not having kids or others to care for and that next level of mental strenght I managed to hold out…my health is that important to me for real. But this is where the COMPASSION AND EMPATHY come in…the UNDERSTANDING.
Just me, dedicated solider, healthy freak, wants to be better everyday, I say to myself over and over as I look around…why are these people eating this trash I just can’t wrap my head around it, are they lazy, uneducated about health and healthy food, do they not care about themselves, what about the kid’s I just don’t get it. But wait…how many of my fellow human’s are in the same situation as me as I look around…and here is where it started to click they all just worked a full day at their job’s- they packed up and jumped into the wagons and took off -but they are not solo they packed up a family -and all that — that itself must involve they are probably tired (meaning the brain and body are not operating at 100%) just trying to hold the piece’s together until their destination -we all get hungry we are human we all need to use the bathrooms, and we all need drinks, we need to get out and strecth our legs. I get it. Most of all what I get now is the options…what phucking options do we have? 5 hours of driving on a very popular stretch of highway between 2 major cities and I did not see 1 phucking healthy option for anyone to stop at (not saying that if there were people would stop at it) so there was no other option your choice is to eat crap food or not have your family eat and deal with that issue.
So my EMPATHY is for our society, we have become so programmed so sold so marketed to that we don’t even realize what the phuck is going on. We are not sold real food in these establishments we are sold convenience, and for that we trade our souls, our health, the health of our planet, and all the other life forms on it. MY EMPATHY is crushing me :( — …let’s start to make better choice’s beautiful people!!
